RUKWA: THE rescue operations on Lake Rukwa, searching for a missing fisherman feared dead, have been suspended, it was announced on Sunday evening, as the standard 72- hour timeframe for rescue operations has elapsed.
The announcement was made by Sumbawanga District Commissioner (DC), Mr Nyakia Chirukie, at Nankanga fishing camp along the Rift Valley Lake Rukwa Basin in Sumbawanga District.
Mr Chirukie represented the Rukwa Regional Commissioner, Mr Makongoro Nyerere, who also serves as the regional disaster committee chairperson.
Mr Chirukie revealed that nine fishermen had lost their lives while fishing on Lake Rukwa, with their bodies recovered on Saturday.
One fisherman remains missing. The government has covered the burial expenses for the deceased fishermen.
Speaking at the scene, DC Nyakia conveyed President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s message, saying the President expressed sorrow over the lives lost despite the rescue efforts. “Despite the efforts made by the government and rescuers on Lake Tanganyika, we have still lost some of our fellow citizens,” she said.

The DC also shared that President Samia extended her deepest condolences to the families, friends and all those affected by the tragedy.
He added that the government, in collaboration with the families, ensured the deceased were laid to rest with dignity.
On Sunday evening, at Nankanga fishing camp, Mr Nyakia announced an additional 46 hours, lasting until Wednesday evening, for the rescue team to continue operations as one fisherman remains missing.
He stated that members of the regional security committee and medical experts would stay on-site to assist.
Despite the elapsed 72- hour rescue timeframe, the DC expressed optimism, saying, “With divine intervention, the missing fisher might still be found alive beyond this period.”
He emphasised the importance of continued efforts, instructing the rescue teams to extend their operations by an additional 46 hours to fight for the life of the missing fisherman. The rescue operations began on Saturday after ten fishermen were feared dead on Lake Rukwa.
The DC commended the rescue teams and citizens for their tireless work, praising their patriotism and commitment.
“To all the rescue teams and citizens tirelessly working to recover the fishers, I send my heartfelt gratitude. Please know that your efforts are deeply appreciated.
You are the heroes of our nation,” he said. He urged relatives, friends of the missing fisherman and residents of Nankanga fishing camp to remain patient, united and prayerful while supporting the rescue teams.
“I urge citizens in Rukwa and all Tanzanians to continue praying for the departed souls to rest in peace. Ameen,” he said.
As of Saturday evening, nine fishermen had been confirmed dead, their bodies identified. A total of 540 fishermen were rescued, while one remains missing on Lake Tanganyika.
