Over 3tri/- transforms Tanga’s socio-economic infrastructure

TANGA: TANGA Region has witnessed remarkable improvements in socio-economic infrastructure following the disbursement of 3.1tri/- over the past four years under the sixth-phase government led by President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Speaking at a public rally in Tanga yesterday, Regional Commissioner Dr Batilda Burian briefed President Samia on the region’s transformation, highlighting key investments in hospitals, schools and water infrastructure aimed at improving citizens’ livelihoods.

Dr Burian reported that eleven hospitals have been constructed across all district councils, in addition to 72 new dispensaries and 23 health centres.

The expansion has significantly boosted healthcare accessibility, bringing the total number of dispensaries in the region to 359, up from 287 before President Samia’s administration.

In the education sector, the government has built 96 primary schools, 13 secondary school hostels and 95 teachers’ houses to address accommodation challenges.

Additionally, a regional girls’ secondary school has been established in Kilindi District, providing a special learning environment for young girls. Water infrastructure development has also progressed, with water availability now reaching 72 per cent.

The region expects to achieve 89 per cent coverage before the upcoming General Election, thanks to the Tanga Water Green Bond worth 53bn/-, which is driving further water supply expansion.

In urban areas, water access has reached 97 per cent, surpassing the CCM Election Manifesto 2020-2025 target of 95 per cent.

On electricity access, all 763 villages in Tanga are now connected to power, with 75 per cent of hamlets electrified, marking a major milestone in rural electrification.

The government has also invested 429bn/- to modernise Tanga Port, leading to a surge in maritime traffic. Over the past five months, the number of ships handled at the port has increased from 18 to 34, generating 100bn/- in revenue within the same period.

To support economic empowerment, 9.1bn/- has been allocated through district councils’ 10 per cent development fund to assist small-scale businesses owned by women, youth and people with disabilities.

Notably, five youth entrepreneurs have purchased electric three-wheelers, creating jobs while contributing to the government’s carbon emission reduction drive.

President Samia began her week-long working visit to Tanga yesterday, with expectations of further unveiling new development projects in the region.
