Over 115 golfers register for Lina Tour 2025 opener

DAR ES SALAAM: ABOUT 115 golfers have registered for the first series of the 2025 Lina Professional Golfers (PG) Pro-Am Tour, set to tee off from next Thursday to March 2nd at the Morogoro Gymkhana Golf Club.

The event was originally scheduled to take place from February 20–23 at the Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC), but due to a last-minute change, it has now been moved to Morogoro.

Tournament Director, Yasmin Chali, confirmed to the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the registration closed on Wednesday, with 115 participants officially confirmed.

This includes over 25 professional golfers, 27 elite amateurs and players in subsidiary categories. Among the notable competitors are last year’s Order of Merit winner, Nuru Mollel from AGC and runner-up Fadhil Nkya of Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC), who are expected to renew their rivalry.

“We are pleased with the overwhelming response from golfers. We truly appreciate the support we received last year and again this year,” Chali said.

With just a week remaining before the tournament begins, Chali said preparations are in full swing. She commended Morogoro Gymkhana for stepping up to host the event on short notice.

This marks the second time the Morogoro course is hosting the tournament, having previously hosted the second series of the inaugural edition.

That event saw Hassan Kadio of DGC claim the professional category title, while Ally Mcharo won in the elite amateur category.

Established in 2024, the Lina PG Tour is organised by the Said Nkya family in collaboration with the Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU), the Tanzania Professional Golfers Association (TPGA) and Penda Golf Tanzania.

The event among others honours Lina Said Nkya, a former national ladies’ team member who passed away on January 19, 2021, in Moshi, Kilimanjaro region and also promote the game.

The four-day, 72-hole competition features top local professionals and elite amateurs, while subsidiary categories will compete in a two-day, 36-hole event.

The tournament also serves as a crucial platform for elite amateurs to earn World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.

As in previous editions, the tour will consist of five series across different courses, in a showdown where top players will compete for a prestigious golf trip to Dubai at the end of the year.
