Njombe counts 200bn/- loss as fires hit plantation

NJOMBE: NJOMBE Region has recorded losses exceeding 200bn/- due to recurring fire outbreaks in forest plantations, prompting authorities to step up efforts to contain the situation.
Regional Commissioner, Mr Antony Mtaka said the region will collaborate with the VicePresident’s Office and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to strengthen fire prevention measures, particularly in rural areas where most plantation activities are concentrated.
He said fire incidents have significantly affected investors, traders and local communities engaged in forestry-related businesses, including timber production and utility pole supply, which are key economic activities in the region.
“Between 2021 and 2026, fire outbreaks in Njombe have resulted in losses exceeding 200bn/-,” he said, noting that the trend continues to pose a serious threat to the sustainability of the forestry sector.
Mr Mtaka said the Regional Secretariat, in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Force and the Tanzania Forest Services Agency, has already launched community awareness campaigns aimed at educating residents on fire prevention and early response measures.

He said the initiatives are focusing on improving preparedness at community level, including timely reporting of fire incidents and adherence to safety guidelines during farming and land preparation activities.
The RC added that authorities are also working closely with stakeholders in commercial tree planting, as well as village environmental committees, to strengthen local response mechanisms and reduce the frequency of fire outbreaks.
He stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among government institutions, private sector players and local communities in protecting forest resources and safeguarding investments. Mr Mtaka further called on residents to take responsibility in preventing fires, warning that negligence and unsafe practices remain among the leading causes of such incidents.
