Makonda off to Morocco to affirm Tanzania’s readiness to host AFCON finals

DAR ES SALAAM: The Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, is expected to deliver a special message from President Samia Suluhu Hassan to the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, confirming Tanzania’s readiness to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in 2027.
Speaking to the media today, January 16, 2026, at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam, just hours before departing to Morocco for the mission, Makonda said the announcement is the result of the government’s significant efforts to strengthen the sports sector. He highlighted that the government has invested in stadium infrastructure, transportation, accommodation, and technical preparations that meet international standards.
Minister Makonda stated that Tanzania hosting AFCON 2027 will be a major opportunity to promote the tourism sector, strengthen sports diplomacy, and enhance international relations through sports.

He added that the tournament will also boost the domestic economy through job creation and business opportunities arising from the event, while emphasizing that the government is working to ensure all preparations are in place to guarantee the success of this major international tournament.
