Kilimanjaro voter roll hits 93 pc target

A TOTAL of 1,090,312 people have registered in the voter roll in Kilimanjaro Region to participate in the Local Government Election scheduled for November 27th this year.

KILIMANJARO: A TOTAL of 1,090,312 people have registered in the voter roll in Kilimanjaro Region to participate in the Local Government Election scheduled for November 27th this year.

This information was revealed by Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner (RC) Mr Nurdin Babu during a press briefing on Monday, where he noted that the number represents 93 per cent of the region’s target of 1,172,394 registered voters.
Among those registered, include 544,189 men and 546,123 women. Mr Babu said that Mwanga District led the region in terms of registration, exceeding its target.

“In Mwanga District, a total of 92,112 people registered, achieving 100.9 per cent of the target of 91,327,” he said.

Mr Babu provided additional statistics from other districts: Same District registered 180,649 people, meeting 100.0 per cent of its target of 180,587. Other registration numbers included Siha District with 79,749 (target: 81,501), Moshi Municipal Council with 144,213 (target: 149,937) and Rombo District with 155,601 (target: 171,330). Moshi District Council (Moshi-DC) registered 306,178 (target: 344,715), while Hai District Council registered 131,810 against a target of 152,997.

Mr Babu commended the citizens for participating in the registration process, which he said prepares them for the upcoming elections. He encouraged residents to come out in large numbers when forms are issued for candidates vying for various positions.

“The local government elections are vital because the elected leaders are the closest representatives of the people, addressing developmental activities in their areas,” he explained.

The opposition Sauti ya Umma (SAU), Kilimanjaro Regional Chairman Mr Isack Kireti, lauded the registration process. “The mobilisation efforts by the relevant authorities this year led to many people registering; we haven’t seen such mobilisation in many years,” he said.

He urged the public to participate actively in the elections to elect competent leaders who are capable of addressing citizens’ challenges.

“I also encourage everyone to attend the campaign events for the candidates to hear their policies, which will help them choose the right leaders,” he added.

Similarly, the Civic United Front (CUF), Moshi District Chairman Mr Habibu Msangi commended the government for motivating people to register for the local government elections.

According to the government, over 31 million eligible Tanzanians, representing 94.83 per cent, registered on the voter roll for the upcoming Local Government Elections, scheduled for 27th November this year.

In 2019 Local Government Election, a total of 19,681,256 voters had registered, which was 86 per cent of the targeted 22,916,412 voters.
