Ibenge warns against complacency

DAR ES SALAAM: AZAM FC Head Coach Florent Ibenge has hailed his players for their patience and tactical discipline after their 2-0 victory over Namungo FC, but warned them against complacency as they continue their Mainland Premier League title challenge.

Azam secured all three points at the Azam Complex on Monday, with Hassan Mubiru putting the hosts ahead in the 28th minute before Gibril Sillah sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal.

The result extended Azam’s unbeaten start to the campaign and left them third in the table with 11 points from five matches, according to the latest standings.

Azam are third in the table, with Young Africans leading on 15 points from five matches, ahead of second-placed Simba on goal difference.

Ibenge was particularly pleased with the way his side dealt with a Namungo team that defended deep and looked to threaten on the counter-attack.

“You have to go to win the game, but the games are never the same,” Ibenge said, stressing the need for his players to adapt to different opponents.

The Frenchman praised Azam’s patience after they took the lead, saying they avoided being drawn into a rushed approach despite Namungo’s defensive shape.

“Against a dangerous low block and a sharp counter-attack, patience is just as important as keeping the ball,” he said.

Ibenge also highlighted the importance of maintaining concentration and hunger as Azam pursue silverware, warning that their strong start should not lead to complacency.

Azam have won three and drawn two of their opening five league matches, keeping them among the leading sides in the title race.

Namungo, meanwhile, remain 11th after suffering their third defeat in five matches. They have two wins and three losses from their opening five games.

Ibenge also called on Azam supporters to continue turning up for the club’s home matches, saying their backing could help the team push for success.

“When our fans come to see us live, their encouragement pushes us to do better and allows us to win together,” he said.

“I invite our fans to the pitch so we can play together, win together and celebrate together.”
