Azam FC left in dark over Ibenge Mali shortlist

DAR ES SALAAM: AZAM FC Head Coach Jean-Florent Ibenge has been shortlisted for the vacant Mali national team coaching position, although the club says it has not received any official communication regarding the matter.

The Malian Football Federation (FEMAFOOT) has named Ibenge among five candidates being considered to take charge of the national team.

The Congolese coach is shortlisted alongside former Mali coach Mohamed Magassouba, Moroccan coach Badae Zaki and Portuguese coaches António Conceição Oliveira and Anthony Da Silva. Despite the announcement by FEMAFOOT, Azam FC says it is unaware of any approach concerning its head coach.

Speaking to the ‘Daily News’, Azam FC Media Officer Thabit Zakaria alias Zaka Zakazi said the club has not been informed about Ibenge’s possible appointment.

“Regarding that report, we know absolutely nothing about it,” said Zakaria. “Ibenge remains our head coach and he still has a valid contract with the club.” Ibenge joined the Chamazibased side on July 5 last year ahead of the 2025/26 Mainland Premier League season.

He replaced Moroccan coach Rachid Taoussi and was tasked with strengthening Azam FC’s challenge in domestic competitions. FEMAFOOT is expected to announce its final decision in the coming days.

If appointed, Ibenge’s departure would force Azam FC to search for a new head coach less than a year after he arrived at the club.
