How KIDO championed USAID’s “Holela-Holela Itakukosti” campaign during Nane Nane Day
Dodoma: In a vibrant celebration of agricultural innovation and responsibility, KIDO—ambassador for the “Holela-Holela Itakukosti” campaign—actively engaged with farmers and livestock keepers during this year’s Nane Nane Day.
Supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through Breakthrough ACTION and the Government of Tanzania through the Prime Minister’s Office – One Health Section, Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Health, the Holela-Holela campaign aims to promote practices that combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and zoonotic diseases, highlighting the crucial role farmers play in safeguarding public health and enhancing food security.
At the Prime Minister’s Office, KIDO stood out in the One Health section, where he interacted with local farmers and livestock keepers.
Through thoughtful questions and facilitated discussions, he provided insights into sustainable farming practices.
Emphasizing the campaign’s message, “recklessness is costly,” KIDO highlighted how responsible farming can protect both livelihoods and community health.
The “Holela-Holela Itakukosti” campaign encourages farmers to adopt proactive measures against antibiotic misuse in agriculture, advocating for responsible practices that ensure public health.
During discussions, KIDO prompted farmers to reflect on their behaviors and how these could contribute to antimicrobial resistance and zoonotic diseases. He addressed common issues such as poor hygiene in animal husbandry and unauthorized antibiotic use, encouraging farmers to share their experiences.
KIDO stressed effective practices like proper handwashing, cleanliness in animal housing, and consulting veterinarians before administering antibiotics.
Throughout the celebrations, KIDO led informative sessions on zoonotic diseases, which can be transmitted from animals to humans and pose significant public health threats.
He emphasized that farmers are the first line of defense against such diseases through good hygiene practices and biosecurity measures. KIDO reinforced the importance of vaccination and adherence to veterinary guidelines, demonstrating how these proactive steps can enhance the health of both animals and communities.
Dr. Salum Manyatta, Assistant Director of the One Health Section, acknowledged KIDO’s contributions during Nane Nane Day, “As our ambassador, KIDO illustrates the vital connection between farmers’ practices and public health.
The integration of human, animal, and environmental health is essential for a sustainable future. Through KIDO’s engagement, we empower farmers with the knowledge and tools needed to combat AMR and zoonotic diseases.”
The enthusiasm generated by KIDO’s interactions at Nane Nane Day not only underscored the urgent need for action against AMR and zoonotic diseases but also celebrated the unwavering spirit of Tanzania’s farmers.
With ongoing commitment and collaboration, the “Holela Holela Itakukosti” campaign, championed by KIDO, stands as a beacon of hope for a healthier and more sustainable agricultural landscape in Tanzania.
