Happy World Children’s Day 2023

Each year, on November 20th, the world unites to celebrate World Children’s Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the rights, well-being, and potential of every child. This significant occasion marks the anniversary of two landmark documents that enshrined the fundamental rights of children globally – the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified in 1989.

2023 Theme: For every child, every right

The day serves as a powerful reminder of the unwavering commitment to ensuring that all children, regardless of their background or circumstances, are afforded the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential. It is a day to celebrate the achievements of children, to advocate for their rights, and to reaffirm our collective responsibility to create a brighter future for them.

History

The idea of a World Children’s Day was first proposed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 1925. The ILO was concerned about the plight of children who were being forced into labor and were not receiving an education.

In 1954, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming Universal Children’s Day. The date of November 20th was chosen to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.

Since 1990, World Children’s Day also marks the anniversary of the date that the UN General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and the Convention on children’s rights.

Mothers and fathers, teachers, nurses and doctors, government leaders and civil society activists, religious and community elders, corporate moguls and media professionals, as well as young people and children themselves, can play an important part in making World Children’s Day relevant for their societies, communities and nations.

World Children’s Day offers each of us an inspirational entry-point to advocate, promote and celebrate children’s rights, translating into dialogues and actions that will build a better world for children.

Significance

The World Children’s Day serves as an opportunity for people in all professions to raise awareness about child rights and their welfare. It brings an opportunity to delve deep into small choices people can make for the younger generation.

Mothers and fathers, teachers, nurses and doctors, government leaders and civil society activists, religious and community elders, corporate moguls and media professionals, as well as young people and children themselves, can play an important part in adding meaning to World Children’s Day.

A call to action for a brighter future

World Children’s Day is more than just a day of celebration; it is a call to action for all of us to play a role in creating a world where every child can thrive. We must work together to protect children’s rights, promote their well-being, and empower them to reach their full potential. By investing in children’s education, healthcare, and social protection, we are investing in a brighter future for all.
