CDF notes child marriage woes despite having legal frameworks to protect her rights

DAR ES SALAAM: CHALLENGES in the implementation of policies and laws, alongside harmful cultural practices and low parental awareness, have been identified as key drivers of child abuse and child marriage in the country—denying girls fundamental rights such as access to education.

This was stated in Dar es Salaam by Lilian Kimath, Girls Empowerment Officer at the Children’s Dignity Forum (CDF), during a media briefing held as part of a capacity-building seminar on child marriage. The seminar took place at the organization’s headquarters in Mbezi.

Kimath noted that despite the existence of legal and policy frameworks aimed at protecting children’s rights, enforcement at the community level remains weak. She added that some parents lack adequate awareness of the long-term consequences of child marriage, while limited access to essential health services further exacerbates risks facing girls.

Acting Executive Director of CDF, Irene Ernest, said the organization is working in collaboration with various institutions to deliver community education at multiple levels, with the objective of ensuring that girls are protected and able to grow in safe and supportive environments.

Meanwhile, Irene Nambuo, Coordinator of the Tanzania End Child Marriage Network (TECMIN), emphasized the need to review and reform discriminatory laws and ensure their effective enforcement to promote equity and safeguard girls’ rights.

According to the organization, CDF has so far reached more than 2,000 girls, providing education and support across multiple areas. These interventions include establishing gender desks and supporting government efforts to eliminate child marriage.

The initiatives are part of a broader social strategy aimed at transforming harmful norms, strengthening the protection of girls, and ensuring equal access to development opportunities.
