Youth, women urged to tap apple farming as imports rise

DODOMA: YOUTH, women and investors have been urged to take advantage of apple farming as the country moves to reduce imports and strengthen domestic production.

Agriculture Minister Daniel Chongolo told the House that apple farming presents a strong economic opportunity with long-term returns.

“I call upon youth, women and investors to take advantage of apple farming and opportunities along its entire value chain,” he said.

He said Tanzania has long depended on imported apples despite having suitable climatic conditions in the Northern Zone, Central regions and Southern Highlands.

By March 2026, the country had imported 1,481.98 tonnes of apples, indicating high demand in the domestic market.

“This reflects an opportunity for local farmers to fill the gap and reduce import dependency,” he said.

To boost production, the government will distribute 600,000 apple seedlings through the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute and Cereals and Other Produce Regulatory Authority.

The minister added that 2,400 farmers and 50 extension officers will be trained on modern apple farming techniques.

In a supplementary question, MPs sought clarification on market access for apple farmers.

Mr Chongolo said the government is strengthening value chains by linking farmers with processors and markets, including potential export opportunities.

He also revealed that 8,261 apple farmers will be registered to improve service delivery and coordination.

“Apple farming is not just about fruit production, it is about building a value chain that creates jobs, income and foreign exchange,” he said.
