From agreements to action: Tanzania’s AFCON 2027 moment

DAR ES SALAAM: AS the countdown to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 gathers pace, Tanzania is sending a clear message that preparation is no longer limited to stadiums and football pitches; it is expanding into diplomacy, culture, infrastructure and national ambition.
Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, has revealed that Tanzania has already signed 22 Memorandums of Understandings (MoUs) with various countries, aimed at strengthening cooperation in sports development.
AFCON is the premier biennial men’s football championship in Africa, functioning as a vital instrument for national unity, political legitimacy and economic development. It serves as a global showcase for African talent, enhancing the continent’s sporting, social and cultural identity while driving infrastructure investment and regional pride.
The agreements that Makonda talked of reflect a deliberate shift towards international partnerships as a strategic tool to elevate the country’s sporting standards ahead of the continental showpiece, which Tanzania will co-host with Kenya and Uganda.
Speaking during an inspection tour of development projects in Arusha, Makonda explained that the MoUs, facilitated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, focus on key areas such as talent development, sports exchange programmes, training and capacity building. More importantly, he insisted that these agreements will not remain symbolic gestures.
His pledge to personally engage partner countries underscores a rare but welcome approach in public leadership: Translating policy documents into tangible outcomes. In a region where cooperation often stalls at the level of paperwork, Makonda’s emphasis on implementation signals a new urgency driven by AFCON 2027.
