Fish centre to produce 3.6m fingerlings

GEITA: THE Rubambagwe Aquaculture Centre in Chato District, Geita Region, is expected to produce an average of 3.6 million fish fingerlings annually once completed, boosting fish production and supporting aquaculture development in the Lake Zone. Construction of the first phase began on March 17, 2025, at a cost of 1.54bn/-.

The project, which is scheduled for completion at the end of the month and has so far reached 87 per cent implementation.

The Acting Officer in Charge of the centre, Mr Bilali Banali, revealed this while briefing the Geita Regional Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Political Committee during its inspection of the project in Chato District.

Mr Banali said the centre is expected to generate more than 180m/- in annual revenue and produce about 300,000 fish fingerlings every month once operational.

He added that the government has so far disbursed 866m/-, equivalent to 56 per cent of the contract value. Geita Regional Commissioner Mr Martine Shigela said the Rubambagwe Aquaculture Centre is among the government’s strategic projects aimed at strengthening the fisheries sector across the Lake Zone.

He said the facility will create more opportunities in the fisheries sector by increasing fish production through cage fish farming and fish ponds in Lake Victoria.

The Acting CCM Regional Secretary for Geita, Ms Walid Josephat, commended the project’s progress and urged supervisors to maintain professionalism to ensure timely completion and adherence to the required quality standards. She also called on the contractor to complete the work on schedule, noting that the government has been releasing funds without delay. “Complete the project on time and hand it over so that Tanzanians can start benefiting from it,” she said.
