Dodoma gears up for Uhuru Torch race

DODOMA: RESIDENTS of Dodoma District have been urged to turn out in large numbers to welcome Uhuru Torch Race, which is expected to arrive in the capital city on June 1, 2026, to inspect development projects aimed at improving livelihoods.
The call was made by Acting Director of the Dodoma City Council, Vincent Odero, while briefing journalists on preparations for receiving the 2026 Uhuru Torch race in the district.
Mr Odero said the Uhuru Torch continues to symbolise national unity, solidarity and patriotism, values that residents of Dodoma District have consistently upheld over the years.
“For many years, Dodoma District has shown remarkable unity and solidarity whenever it comes to the Uhuru Torch. This is a matter of pride for us. I therefore take this opportunity to invite and urge all residents to receive the Uhuru Torch on June 1, 2026 at Vikonje B Street in Mtumba Ward, accompany it through all development projects and participate in the grand vigil to be held at Kizota Primary School grounds,” said Odero.
He noted that the Uhuru Torch has continued to serve as a catalyst for the implementation of development projects.
Referring to this year’s race slogan, “Tanzania belongs to all of us, let us unite to bring development,” he said it reflects the objective of promoting development projects for the benefit of Tanzanians.
“We believe development is a collective process; therefore, our unity and solidarity are the foundation of our progress,” he added.
Speaking on the philosophy behind the Uhuru Torch, Odero said it is founded on the principles of justice, equality, unity and accountability.
“The Uhuru Torch has greatly contributed to promoting development in Dodoma District, peace, stability, solidarity and national unity. Most importantly, it has continued to encourage the fight against corruption, negligence and misuse of public resources,” he said.
At the same time, he encouraged youth in Dodoma District to participate in large numbers in the upcoming youth conference.

Explaining the schedule, Odero said various activities would be conducted ahead of the race, including a two-day youth conference slated for May 29 and 30, 2026.
According to him, the conference will provide opportunities for young people to learn about various issues ranging from civic education and patriotism to economic opportunities available for youth.
Meanwhile, Dodoma resident Mariam Omary said the Uhuru Torch has continued to promote unity and solidarity among citizens by bringing people together and inspiring development.
The Uhuru Torch symbolises freedom and light. It was first lit atop Mount Kilimanjaro in 1961.
Symbolically, it was intended to shine across the country and beyond its borders to bring hope where there is despair, love where there is enmity and respect where there is hatred. Every year, the Uhuru Torch race begins from different prominent locations across the country.
