New AI insurance set to cut livestock losses

DAR ES SALAAM. LIVESTOCK farmers in Tanzania are set to benefit from a new digital insurance system that uses Artificial Intelligence to identify animals and speed up compensation, in a move aimed at reducing losses caused by disease, drought and livestock deaths.

The Smart Livestock Insurance product, launched in Dar es Salaam, introduces AI-based identification that uses each animal’s unique nose print to register and track livestock. The system is designed to improve accuracy in insurance coverage and eliminate fraud that has long challenged the sector.

The service is being delivered through a partnership between CRDB Bank’s insurance arm and Agriculture and Climate Risk Enterprise (ACRE Africa), through the digital platform DijiBima. It was officially launched by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Agnes Meena.

Speaking at the launch, Meena said the innovation marks a turning point for Tanzania’s livestock industry, strengthening trust in insurance systems while improving financial protection for farmers.

“The use of Artificial Intelligence to identify livestock through nose prints is a major step forward. It will enhance trust, reduce fraud and improve service delivery,” she said.

CRDB Bank Managing Director Dr Abdulmajid Nsekela said the technology solves long-standing challenges in traditional livestock identification, which have slowed down insurance processes and created inefficiencies.

He said the AI system will improve verification accuracy, speed up claims processing and make insurance more accessible to farmers across the country.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen climate resilience in the livestock sector, helping farmers recover faster from droughts, disease outbreaks, and other shocks affecting production.
