Coast region targets to register 186,211 voters

COAST REGION: THE Coast Region is aiming to register 186,211 new voters during the upcoming voter registration exercise, scheduled to take place from tomorrow to February 19th this year.

Upon completion of the exercise, the total number of registered voters in the region is expected to reach 1.18 million.

The number of voter registration centres in the region will increase to 1,913, up from 1,734 centres used during the last registration exercise in 2019/2020, marking an increase of 179 centres.

Mr Suleiman Mtibora, the Director of Legal Affairs at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), made these announcements during a two-day training for election officers.

The training, organised by INEC, was held at the Regional Commissioner’s office in Kibaha Town. Mr Mtibora explained that the registration exercise will use Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) technology to ensure the accuracy of voter information.

“We are working hard to make this exercise as successful as possible across all regions. Among other priorities, we will focus on updating the voter register by removing individuals who no longer meet the criteria, such as those who have passed away,” he said.

At the launch of the training, INEC’s Vice-Chairman, Judge (Rtd) Mbarouk Salim Mbarouk noted that, as of January 16, 2025, the voter registration exercise had been completed in 25 regions, including Kigoma, Tabora and Katavi.

He insisted the importance of the training, stating, “These sessions will help officers complete the registration forms with professionalism and fully understand the use of the Voter Registration System (VRS) implemented in this exercise. This training is crucial for ensuring a successful voter registration process.”

The training session brought together registration officers, election officers and Information Technology Communications (ICT) officers from various district councils.
