Bagamoyo Arts Festival goes next level

THE 41st International Bagamoyo Arts and Culture Festival was brightened by a tour of Lazy Lagoon Island and performances from several groups within and outside Tanzania at Bagamoyo Arts and Culture Institute (TaSUBa).

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports Hassan Abbas led the envoys to the island together with Bagamoyo District Commissioner Zainab Kawawa, Mkuranga District Commissioner Khadija Ali, Miss Deaf World 2022 Hadija Kanyama and Miss Tanzania Halima Kopwe.

The second and third days of the festival saw more people attending the festival at TaSUBa ground here.

Among the guests were 98 pupils from Kaole Primary School who had the opportunity to witness performances from Zambian National Service (ZANASE) Theater Club who performed drama and National Pension Scheme (NAPSA) both groups from Zambia.

‘Daily News’ had the opportunity to speak with one of the group leaders of the Zambian groups, Grace Mumba, the ZANASE’s Production Manager, who expressed her delight to be in Tanzania and more so to participate in such an international event.

“The Zambian National Service has several clubs including theater, culture, jazz and steel bands.

In this festival, ZANASE has been invited perform  drama.

“It has been a great honour to come to Tanzania and perform a one hour stage drama.”

Apart from the two Zambian groups, Lumumba Kids, a group of children aged between 10 to 20 years from Dar es Salaam, went on stage to sing and dance.

After those performances ‘Daily News’ had the opportunity to speak to the pupils from Kaole Primary School.

One of the pupils was a sixth-grader Amani Steven who said he was delighted to participate in the festival and see various performances and he believes that since their school teaches social studies, cultural and sports issues, he will be able to participate in forthcoming events.

“I am happy to be here and hope to learn more about the culture of my country. I want to be a singer, but I would like to know more about my country and other African countries,” he said.

Other group performances that brought a vibe at TaSUBa grounds included a performance from Rise & Shine Group, and Magomamoto Theater Group.

Aside from group performances, this year’s Bagamoyo International Festival gave opportunity to few upcoming artists from Bongo Star Search to perform in front of the crowd that jam-packed at TaSUBA grounds.

One among the artists who performed in the BSS competition was Bryson Yohana, the 2021 winner.
