Airtel hailed for 2Africa submarine cable project

MINISTER for Information, Communication and Information Technology Mr Nape Nnauye has commended Airtel Tanzania for investing in construction of the Airtel 2Africa submarine cable project

Speaking in Dar es Salaam over the weekend after inspecting the progress of the project, the minister said the 2Africa submarine project would be a solution for the availability of faster internet communication in the country.

“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Airtel Tanzania for inviting me to visit the construction progress of the 2Africa submarine cable project,” said the minister after visiting the project which is due for completion in May this year.

“I also commend Airtel for investing so much in this project which supports our President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of opening the country to the region as gateway a for digital connectivity. I am honoured to learn that the project has been completed by 90 per cent and very soon will be 100 per cent complete,” he said.

He said the 2Africa submarine cable is an important investment which once completed, will improve internet communication in the country.

Mr Nnauye President Samia has endorsed the 2Africa sea cable project it will attract more investments in the country which will lead to economic growth as well as job creation.

Airtel Tanzania Managing Director Dinesh Balsingh said that the Airtel 2Africa submarine cable project is the most comprehensive subsea cable to serve the African continent and the Middle East region.

“The project is intended to enhance internet connectivity, capacity and reliability across Africa and the Middle East. The project has so far been completed by 90 per cent and will have a speed of 180 terabytes is one of the largest in the world and will make internet connection both cheap and faster,” he said.

He added that the 2Africa project underpins further growth of 4G, 5G and fixed broadband access by providing improved connectivity to underserved and rural areas, in addition, the cable will provide the primary means of connectivity – voice, data and Internet.

He said the infrastructure created through 2Africa submarine cable is a unique strategic proposition that shall serve and provide a platform to all mobile operators and internet service providers.

“Once the fibre cable system has been deployed direct international connectivity will be provided to data centres, enterprise and wholesale customers leading to job creation and economic growth,” he said.
