Air Tanzania cleared to operate in Ghana, expands African Market Reach

DAR ES SALAAM: Air Tanzania Company Ltd (ATCL) has been granted the green light to commence commercial operations in Ghana’s airspace and land in Accra, as part of its continued expansion into the African market.

In addition, ATCL has received authorization to transport dangerous goods, a move aimed at boosting both passenger and cargo business between different regions of the African continent.

The permission was granted by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), which issued a Validated Foreign Air Operator Certificate (VFAOC) to Air Tanzania during a ceremony held on October 14, 2025. The certificate was handed over to Mr. Selestine Kakele, Tanzania’s Ambassador Designate to Ghana, who resides in Lagos, Nigeria on behalf of the delegation from ATCL which toured Ghana this past week.

“Air Tanzania’s decision to commence flights to Accra underscores the longstanding cordial relations between Ghana and Tanzania, built on shared history, independence struggles, economic cooperation, and a common commitment to Pan-Africanism,” Ambassador Kakele was quoted by Ghanaian local media.

He added that the new air link presents a significant opportunity for both nations to strengthen their roles in advancing regional connectivity and continental integration.

According to information shared on Air Tanzania’s official social media platforms, the national carrier will initially operate direct flights three times a week, connecting Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam with Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

“Air Tanzania is touching down in Accra every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday,” the airline announced in a poster on its Facebook page.

This announcement follows the recent launch of direct flights to Lagos, Nigeria, which began last month. The Lagos route operates every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The expansion into Ghana and Nigeria was also preceded by the launch of a direct Dar es Salaam–Pemba–Dar es Salaam route, as part of ATCL’s broader fleet and route expansion strategy.

With a fleet of 16 aircraft, Air Tanzania continues to maintain its position as the leading airline in Tanzania, offering extensive domestic and international connectivity with over 120 weekly flights to more than 15 destinations.
