DODOMA: ATTORNEY General (AG) Mr Hamza Johari has underscored the vital role of the legal sector in supporting the government’s ambition of achieving upper-middleincome status through the implementation of Tanzania’s Vision 2050.

He called on state attorneys to uphold professionalism and diligence in fulfilling this national goal.

Speaking during the Public Bar Association (PBA) Annual General Meeting in Dodoma yesterday, Mr Johari stressed the importance of state attorneys in law drafting and legal advisory roles—areas he described as critical to national development.

“State attorneys must be enablers in ensuring that Tanzania reaches upper-middle-income status. However, we must also acknowledge that we risk derailing progress if we fail to uphold accountability in the laws we draft, the legal advice we provide and our overall conduct,” he cautioned.

He noted that the Vision 2050 draft outlines clear roles for all stakeholders, including the legal fraternity, in driving Tanzania toward its long-term development goals.

“We cannot reach that destination without legal support. The law is the bridge connecting our present to our desired future,” Mr Johari stressed.

He further underscored the need for state attorneys to champion the rule of law, noting that it is foundational to realising the vision’s objectives.

In addition, the AG urged PBA members to strengthen their association into a strong and reputable institution both locally and internationally, with strategies aligned to the national development agenda.

“It is essential to reinforce the association’s role in uniting state attorneys to carry out their responsibilities with confidence and cohesion, ensuring government actions remain within the legal framework,” he said.

On his part, Deputy Attorney General Samwel Maneno assured members that under the current leadership, state attorneys across the country would be empowered to carry out their duties without fear or favour.

“The Attorney General and I are committed to ensuring that all state attorneys operate with confidence and legal protection, no matter where they are,” he affirmed.

Mr Maneno encouraged attorneys to offer sound legal counsel, particularly in matters of national interest.

“Do not hesitate. Our doors are always open. Whether it’s a legal concern or an urgent national matter, you are welcome to walk in or call,” he added.

He stressed the importance of adhering to legal procedures and rules, noting that they are essential tools for attorneys to effectively serve the AG’s Office and the nation.

“Our vision is to see this legal force play a pivotal role in ensuring that the implementation of Vision 2050 is supported by a solid legal framework,” he said.

Zanzibar Deputy Attorney General Shaaban Ramadhan Abdalla reminded government lawyers of their unique responsibility in enabling the government to meet its obligations through legal expertise.

“You are a legal army that empowers the government to deliver on its mandates. Recognise your role and serve with commitment,” he urged.
