TCRA pledges to continue backing the use of ICT, digital enabling systems, and education in STEM in schools

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) continues to support national initiatives aimed at promoting the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), digital enabling systems, and education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

TCRA Director General, Engineer Peter Mwasalyanda, made the remarks while opening a meeting between the Tanzania Mathematical Association (CHAHITA) and journalists on Tanzania’s achievements in national, African and international mathematics competitions. The meeting was held at the TCRA headquarters in Dar es Salaam.

Engineer Mwasalyanda congratulated CHAHITA for coordinating Tanzania’s participation in the competitions, which has contributed to the country achieving improved results each year. He noted that Tanzania has risen to rank among the top five out of 26 participating countries and, for the first time, secured a gold medal through a female student who emerged as the overall winner from Africa at the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held in Shanghai, China.

Since 2023, when Tanzania officially began participating in the competitions, TCRA has continued to finance the country’s participation in the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which bring together secondary school students from Africa and around the world.

Mwasalyanda said TCRA is committed to empowering young people so they can actively contribute to building a digital Tanzania through innovation and the use of ICT-enabled systems.

To date, TCRA has supported the establishment of 800 digital clubs across the country, from pre-primary schools to universities. The initiative aims to promote the development of a generation of innovators capable of creating digital solutions to address challenges facing communities.

The initiative forms part of TCRA’s broader efforts to strengthen digital skills among young Tanzanians and encourage greater participation in technology, innovation and STEM-related fields.
