EAC prioritises cybersecurity in digital push

ARUSHA: CYBERSECURITY and data protection have been identified as key priorities in the implementation of the East African Community (EAC) budget as the region advances towards a digital economy.

Contributing to the ongoing East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) debate in Arusha yesterday, EALA Member from Rwanda, Ms Fatma Ndangiza, said digital transformation must be matched with strong systems to protect citizens’ data and ensure online safety.

She noted that while digitalisation presents vast opportunities, challenges linked to social media platforms and digital identity systems require coordinated action among Partner States.

“As we move towards becoming a digital community, issues of cybersecurity, data protection and the safe use of social media should form part of our budget priorities,” said Ms Ndangiza.

She stressed that regional cooperation should focus on building secure digital infrastructure and strengthening policies that enable citizens to fully participate in the digital economy without compromising data security.

According to her, investment in digital infrastructure and information protection systems would enhance the competitiveness of the East African Community and ensure citizens benefit safely from technology.

Meanwhile, East African Community Secretary General, Ambassador Stephen Mbundi, pledged to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the bloc’s development agenda.

Speaking during the parliamentary session, Amb Mbundi said closer cooperation among EAC institutions and leaders is essential in accelerating regional integration goals.

He noted that a strong foundation for cooperation has already been laid through previous consultations, stressing the need for collective action among the Council of Ministers, senior officials and the EAC Secretariat.

“It is our responsibility to take action and work collectively for the prosperity of our people. That is our focus and we will continue pursuing it,” said Amb Mbundi.
