Stakeholders must step up for sport

DAR ES SALAAM: THE future of Tanzanian sport lies in our collective hands. Let us embrace it fully.

Sport is not just about entertainment, it is a vehicle for social change, economic empowerment and national unity. Together, through inclusive and sustained investment, we can create a holistic sporting environment where every young Tanzanian, regardless of their discipline, has a chance to shine.

Over the past decade, Tanzania has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its sporting landscape, particularly in football.

The nation’s top-flight league has benefitted immensely from lucrative broadcasting rights and strategic sponsorship deals that span from the Premier League down to regional competitions.

The women’s Premier League has also seen encouraging growth, signalling a broader commitment to inclusivity and longterm development in sport.

Such progress is no accident. It is the direct result of the unwavering commitment and investment by government and private stakeholders who have chosen to believe in the power of sport to transform lives and communities.

Their contributions from funding team operations and administrative structures, to securing kit sponsorships and multimillion-shilling commercial partnerships have not only elevated the quality of play but also brought fortune to clubs and players alike.

Equally commendable are the efforts made to improve sporting infrastructure across the country. From modernising stadiums to constructing new training venues, clubs and organisations are working tirelessly to ensure athletes perform in environments that meet both national and international standards.

These investments speak volumes about the vision for Tanzanian football, the results are already evident in the growing competitiveness of our teams both at home and abroad.

However, while we rightly celebrate these achievements in football, we must also broaden our focus. Sports such as netball, baseball, tennis, athletics, basketball and others are brimming with untapped potential. These disciplines too can provide economic opportunities, foster national pride and nurture individual talent capable of representing Tanzania on the global stage.

It is therefore time for private stakeholders, businesses and community leaders to extend their support beyond football.

Let us invest not only financially but also in capacity building, training, equipment and awareness campaigns that introduce these sports at the grassroots level. Early exposure is crucial; by nurturing young talent from a tender age, we lay the foundation for a generation of champions.
