Mwinyi pledges modern markets for Zanzibar’s traders

ZANZIBAR: CCM presidential candidate for Zanzibar, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, has pledged to expand opportunities for traders by constructing additional modern markets across Unguja and Pemba, if re-elected in next month’s General Election.
Speaking during a campaign rally at the newly built Mwanakwerekwe Market in West B District, Unguja, Dr Mwinyi stated that his government’s next five-year plan includes the construction of modern markets in Mwera, Kisauni, Fuoni and Kwa Haji Tumbo to meet rising demand and eliminate makeshift trading environments.
“Mwanakwerekwe Market, which we built and opened during my first term, is already overcrowded. This highlights the urgency to expand and build more markets,” he said.
“Once these projects are complete, the issue of traders operating from temporary stalls will be a thing of the past.”
He further pledged to continue expanding access to business loans, noting that his administration had already disbursed 96bn/- in credit facilities during his first term. He also announced a simplified annual business levy of 30,000 to ease the tax burden on small traders.
Dr Mwinyi called on traders and residents to support CCM in order to sustain the current development momentum.
“If you want leadership that leaves a lasting mark, let us continue. What we promised in 2020 has been delivered. If elected again, we will double the progress,” he said.

“Vote for me as President of Zanzibar, for Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan as Union President and for all CCM candidates for Parliament, the House of Representatives and local councils.”
Traders, through their chairman Said Hamad Ali, expressed strong support for Dr Mwinyi and pledged to mobilise votes for his re-election. However, they also raised concerns over unfulfilled credit promises by some financial institutions, as well as delays at the port, which they said frequently result in financial losses.
CCM Zanzibar Deputy Secretary-General, Dr Mohammed Said Mohammed, urged traders to remain steadfast in their support for Dr Mwinyi and other CCM candidates, citing the Mwanakwerekwe Market as tangible proof of fulfilled 2020 campaign promises.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, speaking at a campaign rally in Kangagani, Wete District (North Pemba), described the upcoming 29 October election as a historic opportunity for Tanzanians to elect visionary leaders committed to national progress.
He encouraged voters to elect CCM candidates at all levels, stating that only the ruling party can ensure stability, unity and continued development.
Mr Majaliwa cited Kojani MP Hamad Hassan Chande as an example of an effective CCM leader, highlighting over 300bn/- invested in local projects, rural electrification, classroom construction and digital infrastructure.
Elsewhere, CCM leaders campaigned in Micheweni, urging residents to back rulling party candidates to secure lasting development.
CCM Publicity Secretary, Khamis Mbeto, cautioned against electing leaders who disregard public interests, stressing that the government is focused on expanding digital infrastructure and social services—with Micheweni already experiencing positive change.
District CCM Chair, Ali Massoud Kombo, touted the visible development progress on the isles under Dr Mwinyi’s leadership, while parliamentary candidate Mahesh Bulisha and House of Representatives candidate Dr Hamad Omar Bakar vowed to create youth employment and expand local industries if elected.
