ZMBF launches project to boost Zanzibar’s seaweed sector

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation (ZMBF), in partnership with the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, has officially launched the Seaweed Socio-Enterprise Programme (SESEP), aimed at strengthening seaweed production, value addition and market access.
The project targets seaweed farmers, particularly women and youth, with the objective of improving incomes and enhancing household welfare through a more competitive and sustainable seaweed value chain.
Speaking during the launch, recently, ZMBF Chief Executive Officer Ms Fatma Fungo said SESEP supports the implementation of the Zanzibar Revolutionary Government’s Blue Economy Agenda and seeks to address long-standing challenges in the sector.
“These challenges include low productivity, post-harvest losses, limited value addition and inadequate access to reliable markets,” she said.
Ms Fungo said the programme demonstrates ZMBF’s commitment to supporting government efforts to strengthen the Blue Economy through practical interventions such as contract farming, enhanced production techniques and improved market linkages.
“Through SESEP, we aim to increase farmers’ incomes and improve the welfare of their households while building a resilient and inclusive seaweed sector,” she said.

She added that ZMBF, as the lead implementing partner, will ensure the project is implemented based on transparency, accountability and efficiency, in close collaboration with development partners, the private sector and local communities.
Ms Fungo urged women and youth to fully utilise the opportunities created by SESEP to build a competitive and sustainable seaweed industry for present and future generations.
SESEP Coordinator Ms Elizabeth Kasembo said the three-year pilot phase of the project is expected to benefit more than 5,000 people, while creating employment opportunities and promoting entrepreneurship.
She said the programme will make a significant contribution to Zanzibar’s economic growth by strengthening marine-based livelihoods.
On her part, Ms Mondy Christopher, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, said the government strongly supports the implementation of SESEP due to its role in advancing the seaweed sector and community development.
“SESEP aligns well with the Blue Economy Strategy and Zanzibar Development Vision 2050,” she said. “This partnership will enhance value addition of marine products and expand economic opportunities for women and youth.”
