Z’bar VP lauds student dormitory progress

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR Second Vice President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla has expressed satisfaction with the ongoing construction of student dormitories at Mauwani Secondary School in Kiwani, South Pemba Region.

Speaking during a visit to inspect various development projects in Mkoani District, Mr Abdulla said the completion of the two dormitories will benefit more than 500 male and female students by providing them with a safe and stable learning environment.

The dormitories are expected to help address the challenge of students walking or traveling long distances to attend school,” said Mr Abdulla, urging contractors and supervising consultants to expedite the remaining construction work to ensure students have access to safe and adequate accommodation for their studies.

The Second VP also directed contractors to construct a fence around the dormitory area to enhance security.

On his part, the supervising engineer from the Zanzibar Building Agency (ZBA), Eng Said Malik, said that the dormitories are expected to be completed by September this year.

The facility will include 24 residential rooms, two offices, toilets, two dining halls, and laundry areas for boarding students.

Eng Said added that the project is being implemented by Mwinyi Building Contract and will cost approximately 6bn/-, funded by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar through the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training.

During the tour, the isles VP also inspected classroom construction at Nanguji Pre and Primary School, where he instructed contractors to complete the classrooms on schedule and ensure the surrounding environment is prepared to meet teaching and learning needs.

He called on residents living near the school to cooperate in maintaining and protecting the school grounds and to avoid encroaching on areas that may be needed for future expansion or additional infrastructure development.

The Second Vice-President also inspected other development projects, including the construction of a clove buying centre in Kiwani, renovations at Kiwani Secondary School, new classroom construction at Chwaka Primary School, and coastal erosion impacts at Mtangani, Pemba.

As part of his visit, Mr Hemed handed over 5m/- to the head teacher of Kiwani Secondary School to support students affected by a recent classroom fire at the school. Meanwhile, TASAF Pemba Coordinator, Mr Mussa Ali Kisenge, said six modern classrooms are under construction at the school with funding from TASAF, at a cost of over 180m/-. The project is expected to be completed by August this year.
