Z’bar to boost maritime transport with new speed boats

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR Maritime Authority (ZMA) is set to acquire two new speed boats to enhance maritime transport between Unguja and Pemba, as well as mainland destinations like Tanga.
This initiative, announced by Works, Communication and Transport Minister Dr Khalid Salum Mohamed in the House of Representatives yesterday, aims to improve connectivity and reduce travel time.
The Minister said the government is actively encouraging both public and private sector investment in the maritime sector.
Private companies like Azam are leading the way, with plans to introduce a new vessel, the Kilimanjaro 9, by mid-2025.
To address the issue of marine accidents, the government is taking steps to enforce safety regulations. In the 2020-2024 period, 45 accidents were reported in the Pemba-Tanga-Mombasa routes, resulting in 37 fatalities.

The minister emphasised that small vessels, primarily designed for cargo and fishing, are not authorised to carry passengers. He urged vessel owners to comply with regulations to prevent future tragedies.
Dr Mohammed was answering a question by Mtambwe Legislator Dr Mohammed Ali Suleiman who wanted to know among others the government’s long-term plan to curb accidents that claim innocent lives in the ocean.
