Zanzibar to host Data Tamasha Africa

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR is set to host the Data Tamasha Africa 2026 for the first time, marking another milestone in its drive to position itself as a regional hub for digital innovation and data-driven development.

The three-day event, scheduled for August 19-21 this year is being organised by the Tanzania Data Lab (dLab) in collaboration with the Zanzibar Ministry of Communication, Information Technology and Innovation.

Organisers said efforts are underway to secure a high-profile guest from either Zanzibar government or the Union government to officiate at the opening ceremony.

Speaking during a media briefing held here yesterday, Minister for Communication, Information Technology and Innovation, Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga, said Zanzibar is steadily emerging as a regional ICT hub through sustained investment in digital infrastructure, innovation and the application of technology across key sectors.

He said the government has created a conducive environment for investment in the technology sector while promoting the use of data and digital systems to improve public service delivery and drive economic growth.

“Zanzibar has made significant progress in expanding communication infrastructure, increasing internet access and developing policies that support the digital economy,” Mr Soraga said. “We want to see data and technology being used as tools to boost productivity, accountability and sustainable development.”

He said hosting the continental event will enhance Zanzibar’s international profile as a destination for digital innovation while attracting more investment in ICT, education, business and public services.

“Major events like this continue to place Zanzibar on the global map as a growing ICT hub,” he said, urging students, researchers, innovators and stakeholders from various sectors to participate.

The forum is expected to bring together more than 250 data scientists, technology innovators, researchers, policymakers, students, investors and development partners from across Africa and beyond to exchange ideas, showcase innovations and explore how data can accelerate social and economic transformation.

dLab Executive Director, Dr Mahadia Tunga, underscored the importance of data-driven decision-making, particularly for developing countries with limited resources.

“In today’s world, making informed decisions is critical, especially for countries with constrained resources. Data helps identify priorities and ensures resources are used effectively,” she said.

Participants will deliberate on a wide range of issues, including artificial intelligence (AI), data governance, cybersecurity, digital economy trends and the role of technology in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr Tunga described Data Tamasha Africa as one of the continent’s leading platforms for advancing the use of data and digital technologies, urging professionals, researchers and the public to take advantage of the knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities it offers.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s Director of Innovation, Samora Chacha, said the event has evolved into a unique platform that promotes the application of data, artificial intelligence and digital technologies to accelerate development across Africa.

“This festival is important for Zanzibar as it strengthens its international visibility as a centre for innovation and supports the country’s ambition to build a competitive digital economy,” he said.
