Zanzibar pushes digital growth, investment opportunities

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Hussein Mwinyi has said the government will continue investing heavily in digital transformation and attracting foreign investment following high-level engagements with companies from Turkey and China.
Speaking at the State House over the weekend, Dr Mwinyi said that digital education is central to Zanzibar’s socio-economic development during talks with Turkish firm FMSS Bilişim Teknolojia.
“Education remains a top priority in the Isles’ development agenda. Digital education is a key pillar for Zanzibar’s future,” he said, assuring the company of full government support in its plans to partner with the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training to modernise the education system through technology.
The president directed the ministry to continue discussions with FMSS to identify priority areas of collaboration, noting that the partnership would enhance learning outcomes while strengthening Zanzibar-Turkey relations.
FMSS Chief Executive Officer, Cihan Aktaş, said the company is ready to support Zanzibar with advanced digital learning systems, teacher training and modern teaching methodologies.
In a separate engagement, Dr Mwinyi met a delegation from China’s Liaoning Fangda Group of Companies, led by Chairman Ao Xinhua, reiterating the government’s readiness to provide a conducive environment for investors. He highlighted opportunities in the aviation sector, noting Zanzibar’s growing tourism industry as a key attraction.
“Zanzibar continues to implement long-term plans to strengthen its aviation sector and we welcome investors to explore the opportunities available,” he said.
The president stressed that these engagements are part of broader efforts to diversify the economy and accelerate infrastructure development through international partnerships.
Meanwhile, Dr Mwinyi also met officials from the Zanzibar Business and Property Registration Agency (BPRA), led by Director General Khamis Juma Khamis, to review progress in digital reforms. The meeting included experts from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), supporting the modernisation of business registration systems and the expansion of digital service delivery.
