Youngest Jain Girl in Dar es Salaam achieves fasting milestone
DAR ES SALAAM: AN eight-year-old girl from Dar es Salaam Yashvi Shah, has accomplished a remarkable feat by completing eight days of Upvas, a strict Jain fast that involves abstaining from all food and consuming only boiled water.
This challenging spiritual practice is significant in the Jain community, as it is believed to purify the soul and foster spiritual growth.
Eight-year-old Yashvi Shah has made history by becoming the youngest Jain girl in Dar es Salaam to successfully complete an eight-day Upvas fast.
This rigorous spiritual practice involves abstaining from all food and consuming only boiled water.
Yashvi, a student in Grade Three at the Aga Khan Primary School, completed the fast from August 31st to September 7th.
Her achievement is a testament to her determination and resilience, as well as the support she received from her family and the Jain community.
Upvas is a significant practice in Jainism, believed to purify the soul and foster spiritual growth. It is a challenging undertaking, especially for a young child, but Yashvi’s accomplishment is a source of inspiration for many.
Yashvi’s mother, Mrs Neha Shah, expressed her pride and admiration for her daughter’s dedication.

“We are incredibly proud of Yashvi for completing this challenging fast,” she said. “Her determination and strength are truly inspiring.”
The Jain community in Dar es Salaam also celebrated Yashvi’s achievement, recognising her as a role model for younger generations. “Yashvi’s accomplishment is a testament to the values of discipline, perseverance and spiritual devotion that are deeply ingrained in Jainism,” said a spokesperson for the Jain Community in Dar es Salaam.
