Govt injects 5.4tri/- in school infrastructure

TANZANIA: THE government has disbursed a total of 5.4tri/- between the 2021/2022 and 2025/2026 financial years through Local Government Authorities to improve teaching and learning in pre-primary, primary and secondary schools.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office–Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), Sospeter Mtwale, said that the funds have supported key interventions, including expansion of school infrastructure across the country.

Mr Mtwale, said this recently while closing a BOOST Project training for head teachers and chairpersons of school construction and infrastructure committees from 287 schools in nine regions. He represented the docket’s Permanent Secretary Adolf Ndunguru.

He said the investment has enabled construction of classrooms, dormitories, teachers’ houses, laboratories, toilets and other essential facilities, improving the learning environment.

During the period, a total of 1,608 projects were implemented, including 1,265 in primary schools and 1,104 in secondary schools, with more investment directed to areas facing acute infrastructure shortages.

He added that 907 classrooms have been built, including 608 in primary schools and 299 in secondary schools, alongside projects for toilets, teachers’ houses, dormitories and laboratories.

Mr Mtwale attributed the progress to strong collaboration between the government, school leaders, infrastructure committees and communities, urging stakeholders to ensure proper use of funds and timely completion of projects to required standards.

He said the training is part of the government’s broader strategy to equip project managers with skills in supervision, construction and efficient use of resources to ensure BOOST projects achieve intended results.
