Man held over Moshi court blaze

MOSHI: A 42-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region, on allegations of setting fire to the former Moshi Urban Primary Court premises, which are no longer in use.

Confirming the arrest, Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander (RPC), Senior Commissioner of Police (SACP) Simon Maigwa identified the suspect as John Daud, a resident of Rengua Street, Mawenzi Ward in Moshi District.

SACP Maigwa said the incident occurred on Tuesday morning, a been stored in the offices.

“After the incident, the alleged culprit fled before the arrival of Fire and Rescue Service personnel, who managed to contain the blaze and prevent further damage,” he said, noting that the value of the destroyed property is yet to be established.

He added that police launched a manhunt immediately after receiving the report and later apprehended the suspect at Maulidi celebrations on Tuesday.

According to SACP Maigwa, investigations are underway and the suspect will be arraigned in court once evidence collection is complete and formal charges are filed.
