Yanga, Simba bring Dar to life

DAR ES SALAAM: DAR ES SALAAM came to a near standstill on the weekend as Tanzania’s football giants, Young Africans and Simba, painted the city in their famous colours.

It was during the trophy parades that turned the streets into a sea of music, dancing and celebration. For two consecutive days, business slowed, traffic halted, and thousands of supporters lined up the roads, waving flags, drumming and singing club anthems as the country’s fiercest rivals spectacularly celebrated silverware.

Yanga took centre stage on Saturday as they paraded their Mainland Premier League trophy through the heart of the city. Dressed in green and yellow, jubilant supporters flooded the streets from Karume Stadium through Msimbazi Street before the procession arrived at the club’s Jangwani headquarters.

The atmosphere was electric long before the team convoy reached its destination. Fans climbed onto buildings, others danced behind the buses, while traders briefly abandoned their stalls to catch a glimpse of the champions passing through the city. One of the most memorable moments of the parade came when the Yanga convoy reached Simba Headquarters along Msimbazi Street.

In a moment that perfectly captured the intensity and humour of the country’s biggest football rivalry, the convoy briefly stopped outside the premises where a giant screen displayed their then player. Clatous Chama’s acrobatic goal against Simba from a previous Dar Derby.

Some Simba supporters stepped outside the building to witness the celebrations, creating a rare scene where rival fans shared a moment of laughter and football banter.

Adding to the entertainment, Yanga defender, Yao Kouassi, recreated Chama’s famous celebration dance, drawing cheers and laughter from supporters packed along the roadside. Chama has since returned to his old club Simba.

Musicians and entertainers also added flavour to the celebrations, with artist Abdul Mtambo, popularly known as D Voice, and comedian Amon Masatu better known as Ndaro, joining the convoy and keeping supporters entertained throughout the parade.

Barely 24 hours later, it was Simba’s turn to bring Dar es Salaam to life. Clad in red and white, Simba supporters erupted into celebration following the team’s 1-0 victory over Azam FC in the Federation Cup final in Zanzibar.

The triumph sparked scenes of jubilation around Msimbazi, with fans dancing through the streets deep into the night. The celebrations continued yesterday after the team arrived from Zanzibar through Julius Nyerere International Airport.

Thousands of supporters gathered to welcome the squad before accompanying the team convoy across the city. Simba also used the occasion to unveil their newly branded Irizar team bus that quickly became one of the major attractions of the parade as players waved to supporters from aboard the sleek vehicle.

The convoy snaked its way through Tazara, Buguruni, Karume, Jangwani and Msimbazi before concluding at Coco Beach, with crowds continuing to swell at every stop. Along Jangwani Street, Simba made a brief stop that quickly caught the attention of supporters, adding a touch of humour to the celebrations as fans erupted into laughter and chants.

The moment further highlighted the lively spirit that defined the weekend-long festivities. Throughout both parades, security officers maintained a strong presence across the city, guiding the processions and ensuring celebrations unfolded peacefully despite the huge crowds that packed the streets.

Throughout the weekend, Dar es Salaam belonged to football. The sound of drums echoed across the city, smoke flares coloured the skies, and supporters danced tirelessly in club jerseys, while chants rang out from packed streets and roadside balconies.

For a moment, the city’s daily routine faded into the background as Tanzania’s two biggest clubs reminded everyone why the rivalry between Yanga and Simba remains one of the most powerful spectacles in African football.
