Yanga march on as Mabedi calls for sharper defending champs
DAR ES SALAAM: YOUNG Africans SC Assistant Coach Patrick Mabedi has lauded his team’s resilience following a hard-fought 3–1 victory over Dodoma Jiji, while insisting there is still room for improvement, particularly in defence and midfield despite the champions tightening their grip on top spot.
Speaking after the match at the Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC) Complex in Dar es Salaam, Mabedi admitted the encounter was far from straightforward, especially in the opening half.
“The match against Dodoma Jiji was very tough, particularly in the first half. We created many chances and won the game, but we did not use our opportunities well. These are areas we must correct in training,” Mabedi said.
Dodoma Jiji stunned the Jangwani giants in the 42nd minute when Never Tigere capitalised on a defensive lapse to give the visitors a lead.
Yanga, however , responded swiftly , with new signing Laurindo Depu calmly converting a penalty in the 45th minute to level the scores at the break.
Mabedi emphasised the importance of constant improvement, noting that challenges are inevitable over the course of a long season.
“In football there are always difficult moments. As a team, we must keep improving to maintain our strong position in the league,” he added.
The defending champions returned after halftime with renewed intensity, pressing high and forcing errors from Dodoma Jiji.

Yanga continued to dictate the tempo and wrapped up the win soon after, with Zimbabwean striker Prince Dube sealing the 3–1 victory to the delight of the home supporters.
Despite the defeat, Dodoma Jiji Head Coach Amani Josiah praised his side’s composure, particularly in the first half.
“We played well in the first half. The team was balanced and showed great character against a very strong opponent,” he said.
The win leaves Yanga comfortably atop the league table with 22 points from eight matches, while Dodoma Jiji remain on 11 points after 10 outings.
