We’re not through yet -Taifa Stars coach

DAR ES SALAAM: TAIFA Stars head coach Hemed Suleiman has stressed his team’s determination to claim victory in today’s crucial 2024 CHAN Group B clash against Madagascar at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Coach Suleiman said this during a pre-match briefing their main objective is to win every match and progress confidently to the knockout stage.

With two victories already under their belt, Tanzania sit top of Group B with six points. A win or even a draw in today’s fixture would be enough to guarantee their progression to the next round ahead of their final group match against the Central African Republic on 16 August.

“Our objective is very clear we want to win. We are approaching every match with the mind-set to get maximum points. We have won two games but we are not through yet. Today’s game is crucial,” said Suleiman.

Despite the team’s strong position, Suleiman was quick to issue a note of caution, emphasising the importance of staying focused and prepared for a challenging encounter against a familiar opponent. Tanzania lost 1-0 to them during the COSAFA Cup in June.

“We cannot afford to be complacent. Madagascar are a strong side and we know them well from the COSAFA Cup. We have studied them thoroughly we understand their strengths and their weaknesses.”

Reflecting on his squad’s preparation, Suleiman expressed full confidence in the depth and quality of his players.

“It doesn’t matter who starts or who comes off the bench all the players are in top condition and capable of delivering the same level of performance. That gives us an edge going into such a tight and important match,” he explained.

Suleiman also acknowledged the tactical challenges ahead, pointing to their narrow win over a defensively resolute Mauritania side.

“Mauritania played a very defensive, low-block style, and it tested us. But we learnt from that match, and we’ve trained specifically to ensure a more impactful performance against similar tactics.”

Currently, Burkina Faso trail Tanzania in second place with three points, while Madagascar and Mauritania are tied with one point apiece. The Central African Republic remains bottom of the group with no points. A result today will confirm Taifa Stars’ place in the knockout phase, reducing the pressure heading into their final group game.

Taifa Stars goalkeeper Aishi Manula has urged the nation to turn out in large numbers at the stadium to support the national team, stressing that their backing is vital as the team fights to secure their place in the quarterfinals. “Our goal is to win. The result of the match will determine what comes next for us,” he said.
