We need value for money in projects-PM

PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has instructed heads of department in all local government councils to properly supervise implementation of development projects being implemented in their respective areas for the sake of ensuring value for money in all activities.

He said the government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been dishing out a lot of money for the implementation of development projects aimed at easing accessibility of social services to the public across the country.

The money being issued, according to him, must tally in terms of value for money with work that is being done accordingly.

Premier Majaliwa issued the instructions on Friday in Namtumbo District, Ruvuma Region when inspecting the construction of the Namtumbo District Hospital.

His visit was a follow-up of various directives he issued on October 18, last year, including removal of 10 substandard doors. His instructions were to be implemented before January 4 this year.

Following his directives a total 67 of substandard doors out of 84 were removed. Some 15 out of 54 new doors were fixed in the new buildings.

Mr Majaliwa expressed satisfaction with the progress on the implementation of his directives, maintaining a stand on the government’s determination to provide quality social services to the public in the country.

So far, a total of 4.2bn/- has been issued by the central government for the construction of 20 buildings in Namtumbo District of which 13 have been completed.

Five of them are in the final stages of completion and the remaining two structures are in various construction processes.

“President Dr Samia is so determined to ensure provision for quality social services to all Tanzanians, that is why she has been releasing enough funds for the implementation of these projects,” he said.

Speaking last year during his visit to Namtumbo District, Prime Minister Majaliwa warned that the government would not remain silent, while some civil servants engaged in malpractices in the course of implementing of projects.

“President Samia Suluhu Hassan had endorsed 7bn/- for the construction of this hospital. The citizens should see the value of their money.

“I cannot condone this poor performance. The government had disbursed the funds since April, why until now the building is not finished? This is ridiculous,” Prime Minister Majaliwa was quoted as saying last year while speaking to ‘wananchi’ at Migelegele Village.

He further added: “I have inspected the hospital construction project, but I am not satisfied with the work done. I have directed all faulty doors to be removed and proper ones are installed”.

Mr Majaliwa revealed that the fixed doors were substandard as a person could still see inside despite the doors being closed.

Earlier, Minister of State in the President’s Office (Public Service and Good Governance), Ms Jenista Mhagama, commended the construction of the hospital, which would largely benefit women, children and elderly people.

She promised that the government would continue allocating health workers in order to provide services in the hospital.

“In this financial year, the government plans to recruit 30,000 employees, most of them for the health sector,” she said.

Deputy Minister in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Governments), Mr David Silinde said President Samia approved the construction of girls secondary schools in all 26 regions.

The school, constructed by Namtumbo District Council, was among the first ten schools to be constructed this financial year.

Namtumbo MP Vita Kawawa thanked President Samia for endorsing 15.5bn/- for development projects in the district, as well as 5bn/- for a water project which has been completed.
