Vodacom deepens investment in youth’s digital literacy, vocational skills

DAR ES SALAAM: VODACOM Tanzania is deepening its investment in youth empowerment through its youth-based programme (VYB), a digital platform designed to equip young people with tools, skills and exposure needed to thrive in today’s technology-driven economy.

Through this initiative that targets young people aged from 15 to 28 years, Vodacom seeks to integrate digital literacy and vocational skills, reinforcing the synergy between traditional technical training and modern technological competencies.

Vodacom Tanzania’s Head of Pricing, Ms Gema Kamara, said the initiative is aligned with the growing global shift towards digital engagement.

“As you know, today’s world is increasingly driven by digital usage. In recognition of this, Vodacom has provided some smartphones to young people as part of supporting them,” she said yesterday during the iftar event held at the University ground.

She noted that through the VYB platform, youth are empowered to explore and discover various opportunities, particularly those linked to digital entrepreneurship, online engagement and emerging technologies.

In addition, the telco’s collaboration with the university has gone beyond device support to include structured learning and professional development programmes.

Ardhi University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Mr Evaristo Liwa said the partnership with Vodacom has opened up diverse learning opportunities for students, including online-based technology training.

He said through programmes such as Information Systems Management, facilitated by Vodacom professionals, students are gaining practical knowledge aimed at shaping them into competent technology experts.

“Beyond academic learning, we are also working together on innovation through various training programmes as part of efforts to uplift and prepare our youth for the evolving job market,” he said.

The university’s Students’ Government President, Mr Simon Kanyasu, said the programme, introduced at the institution last year, is strategically designed to position students to tap into digital opportunities, particularly through productive use of social media and online platforms as income-generating tools.

“As a university, we have several programmes that prepare students for self-employment and employment upon graduation, including training in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer systems and networks,” he said.

He added that the collaboration has injected fresh momentum into student-led innovation, with undergraduates developing technology-based models, commercial applications and digital solutions while still pursuing their studies.

“When you look at these projects, they are being carried out by young undergraduate students who are using their existing skills to develop various models related to technology and information,” Mr Kanyasu said.
