DAR ES SALAAM: Tanzania and a Chinese firm have sealed a 19.7bn/- deal to upgrade Uhuru Stadium.

The Tanzania government signed the contract with the Chinese Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) to enhance Uhuru Stadium, located in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking at the signing ceremony for the 12-month deal on Thursday in the country’s metropolitan city, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Culture, Arts, and Sports, Mr. Gerson Msigwa, urged the firm to expedite the renovation exercise.

“The duration of the contract is 12 months, but we have negotiated with the contractor to shorten it to at least six months. This is necessary because Dar es Salaam currently faces a scarcity of suitable venues, as the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium is also undergoing refurbishment, and I have heard that even the Azam Complex will undergo a similar process,” he said.

Additionally, Msigwa noted that upon completion of the renovations, Uhuru Stadium will reduce the over-dependency on the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. “It will be utilized for training purposes during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals,” he added.

Wallace Karia, the President of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), expressed gratitude to the government for upgrading this historic venue in the country.
