UNHCR donates items valued 29.1m/- for two prison facilities
UNITED Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has donated various items valued 29.1m/- to two prison facilities in Katavi Region.
Updating journalists the Kigoma Region UNHCR senior official, Mr Peter Muriuki, said the UN refugee agency has provided items worth 22,425,000/- to Mpanda District prison facility and 6,675,000/- to Kalilankulunkulu agricultural prison facility in Tanganyika District in the region.
“UN refugees agency recognises that prison facilities play crucial role in dispensation of human rights as well as reformation of inmates’ behaviours, so the donation is for office use and for inmates,” he emphasised.
Detailing Mr Muriuki said the donations included modern flat TV screens, printers, compressors, mattresses, vitenge materials, slippers and sanitary pads.
UNHCR supports the government of Tanzania in providing refugees and asylum seekers with international protection and durable solutions.
Mr Akley Mkude, who represented the Katavi Regional Prison Commander, commended the gesture shown by UNHCR, urging other stakeholders to borrow leaf from the authority.
‘The donation has come at the right time, I can assure the authority that the donation will be utilised at the intended intention” added Mr Mkude.
Meanwhile, the government has allocated more than 17.25bn/- to the Tanzania Roads Agency (Tanroads) for the construction, rehabilitation and supervision of road projects in Katavi Region in the 2022/2023 financial year.
This was revealed over the weekend by Katavi Regional Tanroads Manager, Eng Martin Mwakabende, during the Regional Road Board (RRB) meeting here in Mpanda municipality under the Chairmanship of Regional Commissioner (RC) Ms Mwanamvua Mrindoko.
Breaking down the 17.25bn/- Eng Mwakabete said the fund included 12.7bn/- from the Road Fund and 4.50bn/- from Road development fund.
He further explained 12.7bn/- has been allocated for the rehabilitation of trunk regional road spanning to 1,291.81 kilometers and 201 bridges.
He further said that the rehabilitation of the road projects upon completion will ease the movement of people, services and goods.
Ms Mrindoko further said that Tanroads in the region ought to oversee the project without fear, adding that value for money in the implementation of the projects should be observed.
“Tanroads must be vigilant to ensure the projects are executed as per contract agreements and not otherwise,” she insisted.
The RC further explained that unreliable contractors should not be awarded tenders adding that procurement requirements must be strictly observed.
