ZANZIBAR: TANZANIA has taken various measures to protect, uphold and promote human rights as enshrined in respective constitutions of Zanzibar and that of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Minister of State, President’s Office (Constitution, Legal Affairs, Public Service, and Good Governance) Zanzibar, Dr Haroun Ali Suleiman said this yesterday while opening a three-day workshop on the ‘Draft Country Report on the Implementation of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa in the isles.’
Dr Suleiman emphasised that Tanzania has ratified the charter and continues to implement it, as reflected in the 1977 Union Constitution and the 1984 Zanzibar Constitution, along with the establishment of the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance.
“As part of international human rights commitments, countries are required to submit reports every two years on their implementation progress. Tanzania has this obligation,” said Dr Suleiman at the workshop, which brought together civil society organisations from Zanzibar.
He urged participants to provide constructive input to ensure Tanzania submits a well-prepared implementation report on the African Charter and the Maputo Protocol.

“A high-quality report will enhance Tanzania’s image internationally and demonstrate our commitment to protecting human rights, especially for vulnerable groups such as women, children and persons with disabilities,” he added.
Dr Suleiman highlighted that the Maputo Protocol, adopted in 2003, is a key instrument for addressing gender inequality and advancing women’s rights across Africa, “It protects women from discrimination and harmful practices, promoting gender equality.”
Speaking at the workshop, the Director of Human Rights Reports at the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs, Ms Beatrice Mpembo said that a similar session was held in mainland Tanzania from March 19 to 21.
She encouraged participants to share their views freely.
The Director of the Department of Constitution and Legal Aid at the Zanzibar President’s Office, Ms Hanifa Ramadhani Saidi noted that such workshops strengthen cooperation between the two sides of the Union.
