TZ lures Belarus investors to opportunities

DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Belarus, inviting investors and businesspeople from the country to explore opportunities in key sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, education and health.

The remarks were delivered on Tuesday by Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba during talks with Belarus Foreign Minister Mr Maxim Ryzhenkov at the Prime Minister’s Office in Magogoni, Dar es Salaam.

During the meeting, Dr Nchemba also received a message conveying an official invitation for a working visit to Belarus from President Alexander Lukashenko, addressed to President Samia.

He said the government has continued to improve the business and investment environment, noting that Tanzania is strategically positioned as a gateway to both East and Southern African markets.

“Tanzania, under the National Development Vision 2050, aims to become a regional hub in agriculture, while also strengthening the health sector, with the goal of achieving 80 per cent selfsufficiency in pharmaceutical production by 2050,” he said.

Dr Nchemba added that cooperation between Tanzania and Belarus is expected to deliver quick and meaningful results, given Belarus’ advanced expertise in agriculture, industrial technology, pharmaceuticals and agricultural machinery.

He further noted plans to strengthen skills development through exchange programmes, where Tanzanian experts in agriculture will travel to Belarus for practical training, particularly in modern agricultural machinery such as tractor manufacturing and related technologies.

For his part, Mr Ryzhenkov said Belarus is ready to deepen cooperation with Tanzania in several sectors, including agriculture, livestock, fisheries, education, science and technology. He said he had already held discussions with Tanzanian ministers responsible for education, defence and livestock and fisheries, noting strong potential for cooperation in the fisheries sector due to Tanzania’s abundant marine resources.

“We see Belarus becoming a strong partner and buyer of marine products from Tanzania because of their availability and quality,” he said.

Mr Ryzhenkov also announced that both countries are preparing to sign Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to establish a Joint Trade Commission, which is expected to ease business operations and strengthen trade and economic cooperation.

While conveying the invitation for President Samia’s official visit to Belarus, he further revealed that Belarus Prime Minister Mr Alexander Turchin is expected to visit Tanzania soon for a working visit, aimed at deepening diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
