Twiga Stars in strong spirit, says captain Opa
MOROCCO: TWIGA Stars Captain Opa Clement expressed high morale within the team as they prepare for their opening match against Mali on Monday.
The prestigious competition, which kicks off tomorrow in Morocco, features 12 nations battling for the coveted continental title.
With prize money raised significantly — $600,000 for the champions, $400,000 for the runners-up and $350,000 for third place — the stakes have never been higher.
For Tanzania, it marks their second appearance at WAFCON, having first featured in 2010.
Ahead of the match, Opa said her side is optimistic about their chances to excel stressing their morale is high.
“We have worked incredibly hard and we know what’s at stake. Every player, coach and member of the technical bench is fully committed to ensuring we perform at our best.” The team’s recent friendly match against Morocco was pivotal, Opa added.

“That match was necessary for us. It gave us a chance to identify areas where we can improve and strengthen our game. We learned a lot — both from our successes and our mistakes — and we’ve been working day and night to address those things.”
With Tanzania placed in a challenging Group C, which includes defending champions South Africa and Ghana, the Twiga Stars face an uphill battle.
After their opener against Mali on Monday, they will play South Africa next Friday and Ghana on July 14. Opa Clement remains undeterred by the tough competition.
“We know it won’t be easy, but we are determined. This team is ready. We have faced adversity before, and we know how to rise above it.” She also extended a heartfelt plea to Tanzanians back home.
“Even though we’re far away, we need your support more than ever. We ask for your prayers, your encouragement and your belief in us. We are representing Tanzania on this stage and we promise to give everything we have.”
