TUCTA launches a migrant workers support unit for welfare of Tanzanian, foreign workers

NJOMBE: THE Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA) has launched a dedicated migrant workers support unit aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of Tanzanians workers abroad while also supporting foreign workers in the country.

TUCTA Secretary General Hery Mkunda announced this earlier today, May 1, 2026 in Njombe during national celebrations of Workers Day saying the newly established TUCTA Migrant Resource Center has been set up in collaboration with the International Labour Organization to address challenges facing migrant workers.

He said the centre will collect and maintain data on migrant workers, while also offering pre-departure training to equip them with essential knowledge on cultural adaptation, financial management and workplace expectations in their destination countries.

Nyamhokya noted that the programme will be implemented in partnership with financial institutions to help workers manage their earnings effectively while abroad and achieve long-term economic goals.

He added that TUCTA is working closely with stakeholders to provide legal assistance to migrant workers, ensuring their rights are protected and that they operate within fair and lawful employment conditions.

Moreover, he said that as part of the initiative, TUCTA has also entered into agreements with trade union federations in destination countries to ensure Tanzanian workers are adequately represented while overseas.

“TUCTA believes this centre will enhance safety and protection for workers going abroad, while also encouraging more Tanzanians to explore employment opportunities outside the country,” he said.

He further noted that foreign workers coming into Tanzania will also benefit from improved access to union representation, addressing a gap where many have previously lacked such support.

The centre will also promote compliance with labour laws and regulations both for Tanzanians working abroad and foreigners employed within the country, strengthening overall labour governance.
