Trump: US recognises only two genders

U.S: DONALD Trump has been sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, completing perhaps the most remarkable political comeback in American history.

During his speech, Trump laid out some of his plans for the next four years, including a series of executive orders and a promise to “put America first.”

In a major announcement just after being sworn in as the 47th US President, Donald Trump declared that it will be the official policy of the United States to recognise only two genders – male and female.

Trump said his administration will work to make a “meritbased” and “colourblind society.”

“As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female,” Trump said during his inaugural address on Monday.

The move is part of Trump’s plans to change the US government’s policies on gender and diversity, especially targeting Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI) programmes.

He took the oath of office for a second term and vowed to restore US’s global standing, while also promising a new “golden age” for America.

“From this moment on, America’s decline is over,” he said after taking the oath of office. Ever since he has been sworn in, Trump signed a series of executive orders at his inauguration parade and later at the Oval Office on issues ranging from climate change, immigration and the January 6 riots – with some bound to cause controversy.

Proclaiming that a “golden age begins right now”, Trump also said he would rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” and take back the Panama Canal in his inauguration address.

“I’m going to put America first… The scales of justice will be rebalanced,” he said.

In his executive orders, he “declared a national emergency” at the southern border with Mexico as well as a “national energy emergency”.

He granted pardons and commuted sentences for people related to the January 6 riots and targeted automatic citizenship for US-born children of illegal immigrants; He also took the US out of the Paris climate agreement and the World Health Organisation (WHO), as well as promising tariffs and taxes on foreign countries to enrich American citizens.

Meanwhile, leaders from around the world reacted to Donald Trump’s return Monday to the White House, offering congratulations and urging good relations with the mercurial leader.

“President Trump is always decisive, and the peace through strength policy he announced provides an opportunity to strengthen American leadership and achieve a long-term and just peace, which is the top priority,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. For Russia, ‘lasting peace’ was a key message.

Congratulating Trump and saying he was open to dialogue with the new US administration on the Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin said: “I want to emphasise that its goal should not be a brief truce … but a lasting peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of all people.”

NATO chief Mark Rutte said Trump’s return “will turbo-charge defence spending and production” at the alliance, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said “the “best days of our alliance are yet to come”.
