TFS plants 162 trees in Dodoma to celebrate 62 years of the union

DODOMA: THE Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) Central Zone in collaboration with Dodoma Regional leaders have planted 162 trees and distributed 100 seedlings to citizens during the 62nd anniversary of the Union held at Nzuguni in Dodoma.

The guest of honor, the Dodoma District Commissioner, Alhaj Jabir Shekimweri, commended TFS for its efforts in providing free seedlings to citizens and institutions, saying the move has been a catalyst for strengthening environmental conservation and the fight against the effects of climate change.

Addressing hundreds of citizens and students who attended the event, Shekimweri strongly condemned the indiscriminate cutting of trees fueled by the use of dirty fuels such as firewood and charcoal, emphasizing the importance of accelerating tree planting in the country.

“It is the responsibility of every Tanzanian to participate in protecting the environment by planting trees and taking care of them. We cannot continue to destroy forests for short-term benefits,” he said.

In addition, he urged school management to ensure that planted trees are carefully cared for by watering and fertilizing them, emphasizing the use of cost-effective, environmentally friendly irrigation systems to ensure that the trees grow and last.

Giving a unique interpretation of the celebrations on behalf of the Central Zone Commander, Dodoma Urban District Conservator, SCO Denis Gabriel Kwaslema said a total of 162 trees were planted to reflect the philosophy of Dodoma Region, 100 trees symbolizing the Union of two countries that gave birth to one nation, while 62 trees represent the years of the Union since its establishment in 1964.

In addition, SCO Kwaslema encouraged citizens to come out in large numbers to take tree seedlings provided free of charge at TFS nurseries and plant them in their areas to continue protecting and improving the environment.

In addition to the tree planting, TFS distributed 100 saplings to the attendees, as part of the national “27 Green” campaign aimed at encouraging tree planting every month.

The exercise was held at Nanenane Primary School  with the aim of improving the school environment and encouraging students to participate in environmental conservation.

At the peak of the celebrations, a special Union cake was cut as a symbol of honouring the 62 years of the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

Shekimweri concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining unity, peace, and solidarity among Tanzanians, explaining that these principles are the main pillars of advancing the Union and national development.
