Tanzania Government embarked on the project of improving the infrastructure at the airport as it eyes to attract both domestic and international flights which will subsequently boost the region economy and country in general when all facilities are completed.
According to According to Tanzania Airport Authority (TAA), the rehabilitation and upgrading of Mtwara Airport project is focusing on six areas namely;
- Earthworks and bases
- Concrete and steel works
- Bituminous works
- Drainage and miscellaneous works
- Aeuronatical Ground Lighting Systems (AGL)
- Navigational Aids
