TCA appoints Nackerdien as new national cricket team head coach

DAR ES SALAAM: IN a move aimed at revitalising the national senior cricket team, the Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) has officially introduced Salieg Nackerdien as the new Head Coach of the Men’s National Team.

TCA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdallah Hamis confirmed to the ‘Daily News’ on Thursday that the South African coach has signed a two-year contract and will be tasked with steering the team toward improved performance on the international stage.

Nackerdien’s arrival marks a new chapter for Tanzanian cricket, especially following a disappointing campaign at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League B second leg in Hong Kong earlier this year. The team finished fifth out of six, accumulating only four points.

Interestingly, Nackerdien joins his son, Imran Nackerdien, who recently guided Tanzania’s U19 Men’s national team to a historic qualification for the 2026 ICC Men’s U19 World Cup.

Their success has been widely celebrated as a milestone in the country’s cricket development. TCA Chairman Balakrishnan Sreekumar said the appointment of the new coach is part of a broader effort to revamp the senior team and embrace the input of key stakeholders.

“We understand the importance of involving experienced personnel and listening to the advice of cricket stakeholders,” Sreekumar said.

“After the men’s team fell short of expectations in Hong Kong, we realised a change was needed.” Sreekumar reflected on the U19 team’s recent achievements, calling them a sign of Tanzania’s potential in the sport. “Before the tournament in Nigeria, nobody gave us a chance,” he said.

“But the boys won all five games— that speaks volumes.” The U19 team’s captain Laksh Bakrania and coach Imran were singled out for praise during a celebratory event held over the weekend. The event saw the young players receive performance certificates, cash bonuses and special mementos presented by chief guest, the National Sports Council (NSC) Secretary General Neema Msitha. “It was a proud moment for the country,” Sreekumar added. “It was not an easy journey, but these young players have shown what’s possible.” With Salieg Nackerdien now at the helm, the TCA and the cricketing community are hopeful that the senior men’s team will emulate the success of their younger counterparts and restore the nation’s pride in international cricket.
