TARURA constructs 826 kms roads network in Kagera

KAGERA: CITIZENS in Kagera Region have every reason to smile following efforts made by the government during three years under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to construct 826kms roads network in the region.
The construction also involved the expansion of tarmac roads from 80kms to 125kms.

The Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), Regional Manager, Engineer Avith Theodory said in the three-years period, the budget allocated for roads improvement also increased from 9bn/- during 2020/2021 financial year to 31bn/- during 2023/2024.

“We are very grateful to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for allocating a substantial budget for road infrastructure development. The President is doing a wonderful job to improve people’s lives by implementing people-oriented projects. These efforts should be supported,” he said.

TARURA has also constructed about 1,600 culverts and installed 240 street lights in different areas, while 140 street lights will be installed this financial year, he said.

According to Engineer Theodory, Kagera Region has a total of 8,371 kilometres roads network of which 1,968 kms are supervised by TANROADS while 6,403 kms are under TARURA.

Kagera egion is strategically located, bordering four East African Community (EAC) nations, namely Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Kenya across Lake Victoria. It is also a gateway to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan.

“This is a golden opportunity for Tanzanians to do business and improve both individual and country’s economy at large,” he noted.

Ms Janeth Kaimukirwa (28) a resident of Missenyi District’s Kilimilile village hailed President Samia for improving social services including construction of health facilities, water and roads infrastructures in rural villages.

“The construction of health facilities, water and roads infrastructures in rural villages is a landmark. For quite a long-time women and children had to walk long distance over 30 kilometres to Kyaka or Kagera Sugar to seek medical treatment,” she said.
