Call for Tanzania’s politicians to observe trust, respect, and truthfulness in advancing democracy
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Former Chief Secretary of the State House , Joseph Butiku, said Tanzania needs to strengthen a culture of trust, respect and truthfulness among political actors and citizens to consolidate democracy.
The Ex-Chief of Secretary made the call when commenting on the Presidential Commission of Inquiry established to investigate those responsible for violence and violations of the law during and after the October 2025 General Election where he stated that Tanzania has gained valuable experience since adopting a multiparty political system.
Elaborating, he said that political differences are an essential part of democracy but should be guided by respect, honesty and commitment to national interests.

Mr Butiku said the opposition had an important role to play in a democratic country, but warned against turning politics into opposition to every government decision.
“I would advise this opposition to stand on respect, trust and a certain level of truth,” he said, stressing the importance of allowing the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to establish the truth about what happened.
Additionally, Mr Butiku noted that democratic governance also requires citizens to continue trusting the institution of the presidency and recognising that the country has one President responsible for leading the government.
Mr Butiku, however, said any shortcomings or challenges arising from leadership should be addressed collectively rather than through confrontation.
“Criticism of the government is an important component of democracy, but that does not mean that every presidential decision should be challenged or gone against,” he said.
The former State House Chief Secretary said Tanzania needs greater cooperation among political actors and citizens to address national challenges and advance development.
“Building trust and respect would be essential in ensuring political differences strengthen rather than undermine the country’s democratic institutions and national unity,” he said.
